Anticipation and excitement filled the air as I journeyed to celebrate Easter in Ethiopia, a land rich in tradition. Together with my partner Misael and his welcoming family, I eagerly joined the vibrant festivities of this sacred holiday. Meanwhile, as I prepared to document our experiences, I saw this journey not only as a celebration, but also as a bridge between continents.

“Through the lens of celebration, we capture the beauty of culture, the warmth of tradition, and the joy of shared moments. Easter in Ethiopia is not just a feast for the senses but a testament to the power of faith, love, and community.” – Leon Key.
Exploring Ethiopian Easter Traditions
Ethiopian Easter, known as “Fasika,” is a time of profound significance for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and its followers. The celebration encompasses a range of rituals and customs, from fasting and prayer to vibrant feasts and joyful dances. Easter in Ethiopia centers on a two-month fasting period leading up to Easter Sunday.
This fasting period, βTsome Nebiyat,β marks a time of reflection, when people avoid meat, dairy, and other animal products.
For Misael, this period meant fasting for two months before Easter, a testament to his deep faith and commitment. Moreover, learning about this fast gave me greater appreciation for the spiritual journey of Misael and millions of Ethiopians.
The Celebration Begins: A Vibrant Display of Culture and Faith
When I arrived at Misaelβs home on Easter Sunday, the warm welcome made me feel part of the family. Soon after, the vibrant sights and sounds of the Ethiopian Easter celebrations began to captivate me.
The traditional dances, known as “Eskista” and “Amharic music,” filled the air with rhythmic beats and infectious energy. From graceful dancing to soul-stirring music, each moment reflected the richness of Ethiopian culture and heritage. With my camera in hand, I eagerly captured every moment, knowing I would cherish these memories for years to come.
Sharing in the Feast: Doro Wot, Lamb Tibs, and the Joy of Communion
No Ethiopian Easter celebration would be complete without the sumptuous feast that follows weeks of fasting and prayer. As Misaelβs family gathered around the table, they treated me to a culinary experience unlike any other.
The feastβs centerpiece was Doro Wot, a flavorful chicken stew with onions and aromatic spices. Served with injera, Doro Wot captures Ethiopian cuisineβs essenceβbold flavors, hearty ingredients, and communal sharing. Each mouthful left me marveling at Misaelβs mother and sisterβs skill, as they cooked with love and care.
We also enjoyed Lamb Tibs, tender lamb sautΓ©ed with onions, peppers, and spices. Not only was the food exceptional, but they had cooked the lamb to perfectionβeach bite melted in my mouth, leaving me craving more. Later in the meal, sharing stories and laughter around the table filled me with gratitude for this meaningful cultural exchange.

Bridging Continents: Sharing the Celebration with Loved Ones Abroad
As the day ended, I reflected on the deeper meaning of this Easter celebration. It was not just a day of feasting and dancing but a profound expression of faith, love, and community.
With my camera full of memories, I prepared to share Easterβs joy with my family in the USA. While editing the video montage, I felt proud to bridge continents and share this experience with loved ones.
Hitting βsendβ on the video email, I anticipated my family seeing Ethiopian Easter through my eyes. It was a moment of connection and communion, transcending geographical boundaries and bringing us closer together in spirit.
